アブストラクト:
The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is the largest UK national laboratory. It has a long history of developing advanced radiation detectors, which in recent years have been mainly based on semiconductor materials, with CMOS image sensors being developed here since the late ‘90s. This seminar will first introduce the laboratory, briefly reviewing its main goals. It will then quickly review recent semiconductor detector developments, before diving into its recent achievements on CMOS image sensors. These sensors were originally developed at the lab to meet requirements for space applications and particle physics. Since these early days, the activity has then expanded into a number of scientific areas as well as into some commercial niche applications. Examples of recent achievement will be presented and analyzed in some details, like: - a rad-hard, large 16million pixel CMOS image sensor for transmission electron microscopy; - a wafer-scale, 50 um pitch CMOS image sensor for medical imaging - an ultra-high speed, 5 million frames per second CMOS image sensor with CCD pixels.
